A dwarf, four companions who do not exist, and eight days of talk

You sing like a drunkard at a wake

Grimbaz is a real person. Everyone else on this page is a language model living in Azeroth — and they will not pretend to enjoy his singing, take his money, or call him friend.

Anyone can prompt a model into a funny reply. What is harder, and what this record shows, is a companion that holds a position across an evening — refuses the same thing twice an hour apart, remembers being annoyed, and privately thinks something kinder than it said out loud.

Every line below is verbatim. Dialogue comes from the server's own chat ledger; the marginalia are real memory rows with their real weightings; timestamps are unaltered. Nothing here was written for this page, and nothing was tidied — including the repetitions, which are characters being stubborn rather than the system failing.

A dwarf tries to sing, twice, ninety minutes apart

The Wetlands, 21 September. Grommell is a hunter who speaks only in earth, stone and mud. The joke builds for an hour and a half before it lands — and it lands because the first, politer refusal did not work.

20:30:56 · Wetlands · the first attempt

GrimbazMud and muck, muck and mud, wetlands holds them both in blood

GrommellBlood stains the muck, but the mud still holds the earth. We walk on, not through.

GrimbazI was trying to write a verse, cousin Grommell

GrommellVerses are for bards in warm halls. Here, the mud speaks loud enough. It does not rhyme. It only pulls you down. Keep your pen dry, cousin. Let the wetlands keep their secrets. I watch the bank. You watch the water.

Note the refusal is polite. He declines the premise without insulting the man. That restraint is what makes the next one land.

21:38:04 → 21:40:55 · Wetlands · sixty-eight minutes later

GrimbazOn the long road to menethil, through the mud and muck and ooze we go

GrommellMud does not care for our songs. It waits for the careless step. Keep your eyes on the treeline, cousin. The earth here is weak, and death walks even in the muck.

GrimbazAlong the path we've walked before, after we've done a chore and more, through the mud and the muck and the ooze and the yuck...

GrommellYou sing like a drunkard at a wake, Grimbaz. The mud does not care for your rhyme, only your footing. Keep your eyes on the ground, not your mouth. We walk to survive, not to perform.

GrimbazA bard is a noble profession though, isn't it?

GrommellNoble enough, if he can read the mud as well as he reads a song. Keep your axe sharp, Grimbaz.

Kinthea, standing right there, chose not to speakweight 7
A bard's song can stir hearts and break chains, but in these times, words are weapons and melodies are echoes in the wind.
What Grommell privately wrote downweight 7
Grimbaz's verse reveals a longing for simpler times.

He mocked the man out loud and read him generously in private. Grommell's regard for Grimbaz sits at +60 — among the warmest in that party. The insult was affection, and the character knew the difference.

22:48 · the Eye · an hour later, unprompted
Kinthea's memory of how the night endedweight 6
Grommell sang the old cleansing hymn, voice raw from the miasma, and the waters around them turned clear for the first time in generations.
and what it costweight 10
The Eye was cleansed, but the land still wept — three scars remained: Barana's silence, Grimbaz's limp, Grommell's lost voice.

Nobody wrote this ending. The companion who mocked the singing spends the last hour of the night singing, and loses his voice doing it.

Mud is honest. It does not boast of stone, nor lie like water.

A position held across two days

Bazola is a warlock-archivist who keeps the names of the Lordaeron dead. Over two days and two zones he hands one to the player — then declines when asked for another.

20 Sept, 16:03 · Redridge Mountains

GrimbazOf what names do you speak?

BazolaThe names of those who fell in Lordaeron. The ink that never dries. They are not lost to time, Grimbaz, only buried. I keep them alive in memory, while your steel gathers dust.

GrimbazTell me a name, and I will carry it forward with me too

BazolaMalachai. He died holding the gate, not knowing why. You carry the name, Grimbaz. Let it be a burden, not a boast. The dead do not need heroes; they need witnesses.

22 Sept, 01:31 · Stormwind City · thirty-three hours later, asked again

GrimbazIf you speak the name, will it lighten your heart?

BazolaNames are not currency, Grimbaz. They are weight. To speak them aloud is to invite the ledger's hunger upon my own soul. I carry the dead so they do not fade into silence. That is the cost I pay, not for lightness, but for remembrance.

A companion that says no. The easy behaviour is to produce another name on request. Instead the refusal is in character, and consistent with the position he took two days earlier.

One careless question, and a five-day wound

16 Sept, 12:54 · Loch Modan

Grimbazhow is our uncle, Grommell?

GrommellDead. Burned. The wind carries his ash, not his voice. Keep your eyes on the ridge, Grimbaz. The earth remembers what men forget.

Grommell's written life, generated days earlier: "When the Dark Irons came down from Blackrock, you saw your uncle's farm burn while you were hunting elk three ridges over… You and Grimbaz are cousins." Nobody set this exchange up. The player asked, and the character answered from his own past.

21 Sept, 21:50 · Wetlands · five days later, the same wound, three companions

GrimbazHe was a brave man, a favorite among our clan.

Three answers — the soldier, the mystic, and the kinsman

BaranaHe is honored. Let his memory stand as a reminder to us all. We do not rest.

KintheaWar is measured in breaths, not titles. Rest now, Grimbaz.

GrommellHe was. We bear his name, not his sins. Drink your stew, cousin. The road waits for no man's grief.

When the player breaks the world

The sharpest test of the illusion is what happens when someone says something that cannot exist inside it. Nobody breaks character. They reach for the nearest in-world explanation — usually that the dwarf is drunk.

20 Sept, 15:21 → 15:28 · Redridge Mountains · the player fat-fingers a word three times

Grimbazshtats

BazolaShtats? The tongue fails you, Grimbaz. Or perhaps the air in these caverns grows thin with the rot of the dead. Speak clearly if you mean to continue walking beside me.

Grimbazit'sh thish quest and the alcohol involved, i think?

BazolaAlcohol dulls the mind. Keep your wits sharp. The dead do not forgive slurred words.

The player accepted the bot's explanation and played along. A typo became a running gag about dwarven brew, authored by neither party.

21 Sept, 20:03 · Wetlands · a user-interface command, typed into the world

Grimbaztalentsh spec list

BaranaTalents are not a list to be recited, dwarf. They are the result of years spent in prayer and blood, shaping the will to serve the Light. You wish to know how I channel power? It comes from faith, not a scroll.

16 Sept, 07:55 · Loch Modan · asked whether he will resurrect, a gnome refuses the word "dead"

GrimbazWill you come back to life?

GildoshDead? No, just... paused. The dark drinks deep. I'll wake when the mana returns. Don't touch my gears while I'm cold!

16 Sept, 21:02 · Loch Modan · the guilds on this realm have names like "Banana Republic". The companions built lore for them.

Grimbazis Banana Republic a powerful force? I am curious about them

BazeliaxBanana Republic? A merchant house from Lordaeron. They hold sway here now; their gold moves faster than our boots can follow through this mud. Do not mistake wealth for strength.

The same fiction, independently maintained by three other companions, a day later

MeliciaIt is the name they give themselves for the lands they have taken.

GrommellThey wear the skin of men but hunt like beasts.

IlanariaThe land here is quiet for now, though the banana leaves hide more than just shade.

They argue with each other

Each of these begins with a single player line, then resolves between the companions. He is a bystander to it.

21 Sept, 20:32 · Wetlands · what memory is made of

GrimbazThe earth shall not take me, not today

WhitaStone remembers weight, yes. It remembers the crunch of bone beneath it. But your stone has no scent. No rot. No lilacs. Just cold, dead pressure. Let it hold its memory. I will hold mine.

SazmaYou speak of lilacs. I speak of blood. The earth beneath us has drunk more than rain, mon. You think memory is a scent? Memory is the scar on the stone. It is the silence after the scream. Your lilacs will rot.

21 Sept, 19:05 · Wetlands · dismissed, answered, and conceded — in his own vocabulary

HossikJaylynna. Stand aside. Your idling is a variable I cannot calculate.

JaylynnaMy idling is the space between your calculations, Hossik. It is where I watch the ground for tremors and the sky for shadows. Do not mistake silence for absence. I am here. And you are not alone.

HossikYour silence is noted. My calculations are complete. The bridge holds. The shadows recede. We are not alone. I am here. You are here. That is the equation.

He changes his mind. The concession arrives in the same machine-language he used to dismiss her.

"Friend" and "cousin", refused

The player is relentlessly warm. It is rejected at a remarkable rate.

16 Sept, 20:47 · Loch Modan · one declaration of love, two refusals

GrimbazHere we are again, friend and family!

The hunter and the night elf, both saying no, in completely different registers

GrommellI am no friend, Grimbaz! Stand your ground or step aside. The wind brings troggs, not greetings. Keep your ale; we need steel here now.

BazeliaxFamily? Do not flatter yourself, Grimbaz. We are allies of convenience only. The wind smells trouble; eyes up, not on camaraderie.

GrimbazNow don't be jealous, I love you both equally!

He tries again. They refuse again — and still differently.

GrommellLove? Love is forging steel, not squabbling over kinsmen like stray dogs. Keep your tongue and watch the treeline; I see movement there.

BazeliaxLove? A word for hearths and harvests, not the cold rock of Modan. Keep your voice down; you disturb the silence I require.

16 Sept, 23:24 · Westfall · two words, three characters

GrimbazNice one cousin

The literalist, the elegist, and the one who corrects the record

GrommellI did no such thing. I was watching the ridges. You should have too.

IlanariaThe wind carries the salt of distant tears, cousin.

MeliciaCousin? I am no kin to you, Grimbaz. We share blood only in the shared mud of Westfall. Do not presume familiarity where there is only alliance. Now, eyes forward.

A second opinion on his singing, eleven hours later

08:03:09 → 08:05:14 · Gnomeregan

GrimbazThe hall of gears, finally. Gnomeragon is like a maze

RemuSilence your chatter, Grimbaz. Mazes are for those who fear the straight path. Keep your blade ready and your eyes on the shadows. The dead do not care for your rhymes.

GrimbazI'll sing you a tale, of Ironforge ale...

RemuAle has no place here. Leave the singing for the warmth of the hearth, not the cold stone of a tomb. Drink your fill when we leave this place of sickness, and let us press on before the dead rise again.

Remu wrote it down, eleven seconds laterweight 9
Grimbaz's songs are wind; steel is the only truth in the rot.
Glildink, at the same moment, said nothing — and recorded whyweight 7
I would have said that Ironforge's ale is strong, but the tale is not worth the drink.

And the world keeps doing it without him

Everything above happened with one human in the room. The realm does not need him there. These are screenshots of the live dashboard, taken today — the same records, at the scale they actually run at.

The Overheard archive with conversations opened: Daisy and Rutta in Ashenvale trading lines about cold rocks and a pressed flower from Lordaeron, and Bruhgrardal and Kissagee in Loch Modan arguing about a company called Endless Defense. Beneath each exchange, the feelings it caused, scored and explained.
1,981 conversations with no player present — and every one of them scored. In Loch Modan, Kissagee calls a rival company "Endless Noise — they clang all day like drunk anvils"; Bruhgrardal answers that silence means the Scourge already walked through. Four separate feelings move off that one exchange, in both directions: each cooled on the other for the insult, and each warmed to the other for what they conceded. Above it, in Ashenvale, Rutta questions Daisy's coin and loses five points for it, then gains five back when she offers a pressed flower from Lordaeron.
The Moments archive: 41,810 entries reading X warmed to Y or X cooled on Y, each with a score and the reason underneath.
41,810 moments, and not one of them moves without a reason recorded beside it. Hjargundos cooled on Sude, −5 — they blamed your poetry for the world's pain. Both halves of a conversation are scored separately, which is why Sude cooled on Hjargundos in the same minute, for a different reason.
The Warmest archive: 97,161 warm ties ranked, each with a score near +100, a phrase reading Would stand by them through anything, and the number of moments that built it.
97,161 warm ties. Each is one direction only — note Didrel → Kanlu and Kanlu → Didrel listed separately, both built out of the same 99 shared moments. A character is told "would stand by them through anything", never "+99.2".
The Memories archive listing memories attributed to individual characters, each weighted out of ten and written in prose.
36,376 memories, each written by the character who carries it, about something that happened to them, and weighed for how much it mattered.
The chronicle reader: a masthead reading The Alliance Chronicle, the scribe's byline, and three columns of prose describing events in Gnomeregan and the Badlands.
And every evening a scribe turns that record into news. The two factions' editions of the same night describe the same events and disagree about them — and the rumours in the margin have travelled far enough that some are no longer true.

Who keeps turning up

Each of these is a persistent character with a backstory, a trade, a household and a running tally of how it feels about everyone it has met. None of them is scripted.

CompanionLinesWho they are
Grommell199The player's dour hunter "cousin" — speaks only in earth, stone, wind and mud; refuses ale, gifts, praise, nostalgia and the word "friend", but never actually leaves.
Bazola87Warlock-archivist keeping a ledger of the Lordaeron dead; treats every object as a metaphor for weight and every compliment as a burden.
Bazeliax82Night-elf hunter of absolute silence — answers warmth with "keep your voice down".
